District Commissioner's Corner

April 2008

Greetings Commissioners,

Attached please find the April Commissioner’s Corner newsletter and an updated RDM Commissioner Corps org chart with lots of blank spaces for positions to be filled. The unit visit status box of the news is also under reporting the actual unit visits we’re making so please have a look at the unit visits page as I have it recorded and send any updates to me. Remember, we have a goal to visit with each unit at least twice this year. We also have several new units that need and deserve your good commissioner service to help them succeed.

For April's Roundtable I'm looking forward to meeting the leaders and youth of Pack 307. April is Handicap Awareness month and we're honored to have these youth lead us in the opening.

Looking forward to May we have the District Dinner in place of the Roundtable. Just think of it like a giant breakout with good food and fun in the theme of 'Scouts of the Round Table'. Arrrgh! (oops, that was last year). Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Pray, doest bringeth thine fynest Elizabethan English.

For June we're lining up the program preview. Please forward suggestions for venues and vendors to Doug Spindler to make this a rich program where everyone would benefit.

Yours in Scouting,
Peter Gruenbeck
District Commissioner

March 2008

Hello Commissioners,

Please note the change of time and location of the commissioner staff meeting.

Thursday, Mar 6th at 7:30 at the
Irvine Stake (same place as Roundtable)
Map

Up for March we have the following:

  • Commissioner College on March 8th
  • Charter Presentations
  • Camporee and the Commissioner's Scout Law Game

Here’s the agenda for what we need to cover (some from last month we didn't get to):

  • Pre-Meeting: Unit Visit Reports
  • ADC Team Breakouts
  • Roundtable Breakout Vision for Boy Scout and Venturing
  • Update on Unit Commissioner unit assignments. We don’t have enough commissioner to cover all units while maintaining a limit of 3 units per commissioner, so units with greatest need will be given priority
  • Role of the New Unit Commissioner
  • Role of the Lifesaving Commissioner
  • Recommendations for Commissioners and Roundtable commissioners/staff

Also, the national site has been reorganized. The Commissioner's page is now here:

February 2008

Hello Commissioners,

February is a good month to do Unit Uniform Inspections. Here are links to the Uniform Inspection Sheets. You might forward these links or printouts to your unit leaders so the kids and parents can get ready for a Unit Uniform Inspection.

January 2008

Happy New Year Scouters,

I hope you've all had festive and safe holiday celebrations. I know there are many new committees in place. Remember, you're not 'Trained' in your new position until you've updated your leader specific training. Please watch the district training schedule for February and March.

Congratulations to all the units that turned in their recharters on time. We've also seen a dramatic increase in the number of online recharters over last year - estimated at about 60%. Most units turned in their recharters in the first two weeks of December. We'll be on the same schedule starting in September this year so please take some time to think about what went well and what needs to get started sooner.

We'll be reviewing and updating the Commissioner unit assignments this month. If you have particular need for a full or part time commissioner, please let me know. Our Commissioners are experienced resources available to your unit key-three: committee chair and unit leader and the charter organization rep, to help you put on a better program.

Please look forward to being contacted for your Unit Self Assessment. This is a great tool to help you review and evaluate your current program. Your commissioner can bring a wealth of experience and ideas to help you 'mix it up' a bit and energize your program for the rest of the year.

For those who have not turned in their 2007 Centennial Quality Unit reports and 2008 Centennial Quality Unit commitments, your commissioner can help with this also.

Yours in Scouting,
Peter Gruenbeck
District Commissioner

Ask Andy

Looking for an example of how a Commissioner can help? Here's a great example from a Council newsletter that is now also a regular feature of the NetCommish. It is a Commissioner's column called "Ask Andy" that gives Scouters great, helpful advice.
