December

Recharters are at about 25% at this time with 80% of those being online recharters. We're expecting several recharters to be turned in at December Roundtable and expect we'll have several to follow up as well. I'll have a list for the Unit Commissioners to make house calls to ensure every unit succeeds with recharter.

Looking ahead into January, Unit Commissioners should also be working with units on the Unit Self Assessments. Many units will have new leadership in place so this is a good time to have a look to see what works and what needs work. Every unit should be good enough for your own son.

See you at the Roundtable!

News Flash

We've received a donation of 2 coupons valued at $90 each for 1-hour Duffy Boat Rentals at Newport Beach (next to the Sea Base). The boats hold up to 12 of your deserving committee members to celebrate a year of scouting well done. We'll be giving away the ticket by random draw as follows:

  1. 1 coupon awarded to a unit who turns in their recharter by Nov 15th AND uses the Online Recharter to submit their charter. Eligible units not selected in this draw are also eligible for the second chance draw.
  2. 1 coupon awarded to a unit who turns in their recharter by Nov 30th AND uses the Online Recharter to submit their charter.

Online Recharter is OPEN for business and November Roundtable on Nov 8th is the perfect time to turn in your packets. Your Commissioner Corps is working hard to plan an efficient work flow for checking the packets to get everyone through quickly and minimize 'red flags' which prevent the charter from being completed.

You'll need your council provided Access Code, Unit Type (e.g. Pack) and Unit Number to register.

Also coming up for November is Scouting for Food. As in previous years, there will be 2 major drop off areas at the Irvine LDS Stake on Lake and at the Newport LDS Stake on Dover. We'll need help to unload cars, sort food and load the big truck trailers. This is a perfect opportunity for all high school students (Scouting or non-Scouting) to log some community service hours. Please contact Paul McNutt (on the Contact Page) for more info or to offer to help. Watch this space for more info.

Hello Scouters,

Long overdue but finally here is a posted list where you can Find Your Commissioner online.

Units should be well underway with the recharter process, but I know there are still too many recharter packets on Nancy's desk at the scout house. If you can't make it to the scout house to pick it up, please contact your commissioner who can arrange to get it to you and perhaps help you with it at the same time.

Online Recharter opens Nov 2nd (60 days before the end of the year) and November Roundtable on Nov 8th is the perfect time to turn in your packets.

August

Hello Scouters, I'm back from the Philmont Training Center in Cimarron, New Mexico. Wow! What a facility, what a program, what a place. We had a terrific faculty team from the Greater Cleveland Council for the Administration of Commissioner Service course. The 23 course participants were all great dedicated Scouters from all over the country. I'm still reviewing all the notes I took and digesting the information from this intensive week, but I now have a very clear view of what this job entails and requires.

Take the family. My wife joined the Silverados for museum tours, crafts and all 3 levels of the COPE courses. My son was a Trailblazer and daughter was a Mustang where they enjoyed some back county day and overnight outings, archery, rifle, museums, crafts and games. Now they both want to go back for a real back country trek.

If any of you ever want to attend the PTC for training, please contact our district professionals or myself for a council recommendation so you'll get an invitation letter.

Wanted - Unit Commissioners

Have you been a cub leader and a scout leader? Do you like to help others succeed? Then role of Unit Commissioner may be for you. More info...

We're making some progress on recruiting new commissioners, though we have a lot of work left to do. Please send me your nominations for commissioner candidates.

Annual Planning

August is the time for annual planning for most units. Please make yourselves available to your units. I'll have a annual calendar summary for you at the next staff meeting you can use as a guide. This is also the time to start thinking about fall leadership training and unit succession planning. Are your units 'top heavy' where the current leadership may graduate out next year? This is one of the primary causes for unit failure.

Commissioner Staff Meeting

I'd like to try holding the next commissioner staff meeting at the August Round Table as a breakout session. Please plan to arrive a bit early for Round Table to help set up the hall and to meet and greet our district membership.
